Conditions & concerns
What We Treat
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine in Vienna, Virginia.
Our philosophy
At Fingertips, care begins with understanding how you feel.
Our specialties include women’s health, fertility, pregnancy and postpartum care, men’s health, and support for nerve-related symptoms. From painful periods and the challenges of trying to conceive to morning sickness, recovery after birth, urinary concerns, or persistent nerve pain, care begins with understanding what you are experiencing.
Through detailed conversation, observation, and tongue and pulse assessment, we identify your individual Chinese medicine pattern and develop a treatment plan around your needs.
Care may include acupuncture, customized Chinese herbal medicine, and supporting therapies, selected with attention to your stage of life, existing medical care, and treatment goals.
What we treat
Where care can help.
01
Women’s Health
Menstrual and menopausal symptoms can affect far more than your cycle. We consider pain, bleeding patterns, sleep, digestion, temperature changes, and emotional wellbeing together when planning care.
Common concerns
- Painful periods: Lower abdominal cramping, low-back aching, and discomfort that interfere with work, exercise, or rest.
- Premenstrual symptoms: Breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, irritability, and changes in sleep before your period.
- Irregular or absent periods: A consultation about your cycle history and associated symptoms, alongside medical investigation of the cause.
- Endometriosis-associated discomfort: Complementary care for menstrual or pelvic pain in patients with an established diagnosis; treatment does not remove endometriosis lesions.
- PCOS-related concerns: Individualized discussion of cycle symptoms, sleep, stress, and your existing care plan. Acupuncture does not replace metabolic assessment or prescribed treatment for PCOS.
- Perimenopause and menopause: Symptom-focused care for hot flashes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, and changes in wellbeing. Evidence for acupuncture’s effects on hot flashes is mixed.
Chinese medicine treatment is tailored to your symptom pattern. Heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, and bleeding after menopause require medical evaluation.
02
Fertility & Preconception Support
Trying to conceive can bring physical demands, uncertainty, and an exhausting schedule. Fingertips offers individualized care for people preparing for pregnancy or receiving fertility treatment, with attention to comfort and wellbeing throughout the process.
Reasons to seek support
- Preparing to conceive: Reviewing your menstrual history, sleep, digestion, stress, and current health concerns to identify appropriate treatment goals.
- Trying with irregular cycles or a reproductive diagnosis: Care informed by an established diagnosis such as PCOS or endometriosis and coordinated with your medical plan.
- IUI and IVF: Complementary sessions during treatment, with goals such as addressing tension, sleep difficulties, or discomfort and adapting visits to your clinic’s schedule.
- After pregnancy loss: Thoughtful support for rest and physical comfort once necessary medical care has been provided, with referral for emotional support when needed.
Acupuncture has not been shown reliably to improve pregnancy or live-birth rates. We do not promise improved egg quality, restored ovarian reserve, or successful implantation. Any herbs or supplements must be reviewed with your fertility team before use.
03
Pregnancy & Postpartum Care
During pregnancy
Individualized care for morning sickness, physical discomfort, and changing needs throughout pregnancy, alongside your obstetrician or midwife.
Concerns we can assess
- Morning sickness, nausea & vomiting: Care for persistent queasiness, food aversions, retching, and vomiting, with treatment tailored to your symptoms and pregnancy stage.
- Breech presentation: Assessment for moxibustion to encourage a head-down position, coordinated with your maternity team; turning cannot be guaranteed.
- Pregnancy discomfort & fatigue: Back and pelvic pain, sciatica-related discomfort, muscle tension, digestive symptoms, exhaustion, and difficulty sleeping.
After birth
Care for your recovery, feeding concerns, energy, and emotional health during the early weeks and the months that follow.
Concerns we can assess
- Recovery after childbirth: Individualized care for lingering discomfort, abdominal cramping, digestive changes, and strain from feeding or carrying your baby.
- Lactation & breastfeeding: Complementary care for delayed milk production, low supply, and difficulty maintaining supply, alongside professional lactation support.
- Postpartum fatigue: Assessment of persistent exhaustion, considering birth recovery, nutrition, feeding demands, sleep, and possible medical causes.
- Postpartum depression: Acupuncture as complementary care for depressive symptoms, with attention to mood, sleep, fatigue, and recovery alongside appropriate mental health treatment.
Treatment is adapted to pregnancy and breastfeeding suitability. Acupuncture complements maternity care; severe vomiting, heavy bleeding, or symptoms of infection require prompt medical attention.
04
Men’s Health
Confidential, individualized care for urinary concerns, pelvic discomfort, sexual wellbeing, and hair loss.
Common concerns
- Enlarged prostate & urinary symptoms: Frequency, urgency, weak stream, incomplete emptying, and waking at night to urinate.
- Erectile difficulties & low libido: Care informed by your symptoms, medical findings, and associated stress, fatigue, or sleep concerns.
- Chronic pelvic & genital pain: Persistent aching, pressure, or discomfort, including medically evaluated chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.
- Male pattern hair loss & thinning: Consultations for receding hairlines, crown thinning, and increased shedding, with individualized assessment and realistic treatment goals.
Care complements appropriate medical treatment. Evidence for prostate symptom relief, erectile function, and hair regrowth remains limited.
06
Headaches & Migraines
A headache history involves more than where it hurts. We ask how often headaches occur, how long they last, what accompanies them, and whether they follow changes in sleep, stress, meals, or your menstrual cycle.
Common concerns
- Migraines: Recurring attacks that may involve throbbing pain, nausea, light or sound sensitivity, and sometimes visual or sensory aura.
- Tension-type headaches: Pressure or tightness around the forehead, temples, or back of the head, sometimes alongside neck and shoulder tension.
- Menstrual migraines: Migraine attacks that follow a recurring pattern around your period.
- Headaches associated with neck or jaw tension: Recurring head discomfort that warrants assessment of the surrounding muscles and an appropriate headache diagnosis.
Acupuncture may reduce the frequency of migraines and tension-type headaches. We can track headache days and their effect on daily life while you continue any prescribed treatment. A sudden, unusually severe headache or new neurological symptoms need urgent medical assessment.
07
Digestive Health
Digestive symptoms may fluctuate with meals, stress, medication, or changes in routine. We ask about the timing of your discomfort, bowel habits, appetite, and any investigations you have already had.
Common concerns
- Bloating and abdominal discomfort: Fullness, gas, or recurring discomfort after eating.
- Constipation: Infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, straining, or a feeling of incomplete emptying.
- Loose stools and urgency: Recurring episodes that disrupt work, travel, or daily routines, after relevant causes have been evaluated.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Symptom-focused care for an established diagnosis, including pain, bloating, and changing bowel habits.
- Nausea, reflux, and indigestion: Discussion of recurrent queasiness, heartburn, upper abdominal discomfort, or uncomfortable fullness, alongside appropriate medical care.
Acupuncture or individualized herbal medicine may be considered according to your diagnosis, medications, and Chinese medicine assessment. Evidence varies; acupuncture research for IBS is mixed. Care does not replace treatment for infection, inflammatory bowel disease, or other underlying digestive disease.
08
Stress, Sleep & Emotional Wellbeing
Some people feel exhausted but unable to settle. Others notice that emotional strain arrives as a tight jaw, tense shoulders, unsettled digestion, or repeated waking at night. We take time to understand the pattern and agree on practical treatment goals.
Common concerns
- Stress-related tension: Tight muscles, jaw clenching, restlessness, or difficulty unwinding after a demanding day.
- Difficulty falling asleep: Feeling physically tired while your thoughts remain active at bedtime.
- Interrupted or unrefreshing sleep: Repeated waking, early waking, or getting up without feeling rested.
- Emotional strain alongside a health condition: Support while coping with persistent pain, fertility treatment, cancer care, or major life changes.
- Fatigue: Discussion of low energy in relation to sleep, pain, daily demands, and any medical causes that need assessment.
Sessions offer a quiet setting and individualized acupuncture care, with goals centered on rest and comfort. Evidence for treating insomnia is limited. Acupuncture can complement mental health care and established sleep treatments; it does not replace them.
09
Seasonal Allergies
Seasonal allergic rhinitis can mean weeks of sneezing, congestion, and disrupted rest. Acupuncture may help some people manage nasal allergy symptoms alongside their usual allergy care.
Common concerns
- Sneezing and a runny nose: Repeated symptoms during pollen season.
- Nasal congestion: A blocked or stuffy nose that affects daily comfort.
- Nasal itching and related discomfort: Symptoms that occur as part of an established seasonal allergy pattern.
We review when symptoms appear, their effect on sleep, and what treatments you already use. Acupuncture does not replace prescribed medication or emergency treatment for a severe allergic reaction.
10
Oncology Support
Cancer treatment can leave you managing symptoms long after an appointment ends. Fingertips offers supportive acupuncture during treatment and survivorship, with goals centered on comfort, daily function, and quality of life.
Common concerns
- Treatment-related nausea and vomiting: Complementary support alongside prescribed anti-nausea medication.
- Joint and muscle pain: Including joint discomfort associated with aromatase inhibitors and other treatment-related musculoskeletal symptoms.
- Neuropathy symptoms: Tingling, burning, numbness, or discomfort associated with chemotherapy, for which research is still developing.
- Fatigue and sleep difficulties: Support for symptoms that affect your ability to rest and manage everyday activities.
- Hot flashes and night sweats: Particularly during hormone-related cancer treatment.
- Dry mouth: Including symptoms following head and neck radiation, where acupuncture may be considered with your oncology team.
- Stress and anxiety: Support alongside appropriate psychological and medical care.
Sessions are adapted to your treatment schedule, blood counts when relevant, medications, skin condition, and other medical considerations. Acupuncture does not treat the cancer itself. Herbs require a separate interaction review and coordination with your oncology team.

Pain & Musculoskeletal Health
Pain may begin with an injury, build gradually through repetitive activity, or persist long after the initial problem. Our approach considers where you hurt, what brings it on, how you move, and how discomfort affects work, exercise, and rest.
Common concerns
- Back and neck pain: Persistent aching, stiffness, muscle spasms, or tension associated with prolonged sitting, desk work, or everyday movement.
- Shoulder pain: Pain when lifting, reaching, dressing, or sleeping on your side, including discomfort associated with a diagnosed frozen shoulder or rotator cuff condition.
- Arthritis and joint pain: Aching and stiffness in the knees, hips, hands, or other joints. Acupuncture has particularly supportive evidence for knee osteoarthritis pain.
- Repetitive strain and tendon-related pain: Elbow, wrist, forearm, or heel discomfort associated with overuse, including tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis.
- Jaw pain and clenching: Jaw muscle tenderness, facial aching, and tension associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMD/TMJ).
- Fibromyalgia and widespread pain: Persistent body aches and sensitivity, considered alongside fatigue and disrupted sleep.
- Sports injuries and recovery after surgery: Symptom-focused care alongside rehabilitation, once the injury has been assessed or your surgeon has cleared treatment.
The aim is to reduce pain and improve everyday function. Acupuncture does not repair a torn tendon, reverse arthritis, or replace necessary rehabilitation; the suitability and evidence differ across these concerns.

Facial Wellness
Facial acupuncture offers a personalized approach to cosmetic care for people interested in exploring gradual changes in appearance and facial comfort. Consultations consider your skin, health history, and the results you hope to see.
Common concerns
- Fine lines and expression lines: Discussing realistic goals for changes in their appearance.
- A tired-looking complexion: Exploring cosmetic goals without promising lifting, resurfacing, or a particular degree of change.
- Facial tension: Assessing habitual tension around the brow or jaw and whether a separate pain-focused treatment is appropriate.
Fingertips uses a meridian-guided approach, with treatment tailored to the individual. Research on cosmetic benefits remains limited, and results vary. We do not guarantee collagen production, wrinkle removal, or a nonsurgical facelift.
