Overview

Gua sha is a traditional manual therapy that uses a smooth-edged tool to apply repeated, controlled strokes over lubricated skin. In TCM, it is used to move stagnant qi and blood and release areas of tension along the muscles and meridians.

Stagnation describes a pattern in which movement is considered restricted, often associated with tightness, aching, or tenderness. Gua sha is traditionally chosen to encourage freer movement and ease discomfort, particularly around the neck, shoulders, and back.

What to expect

After assessing the area, your practitioner will apply a suitable lubricant and use measured strokes, adjusting the pressure to your needs. You may feel firm pressure, friction, and warmth. Body gua sha can leave temporary red or purple speckled marks, called sha, which usually fade over several days. These marks reflect changes in small blood vessels near the skin’s surface; darker marks do not mean a more effective treatment. Your practitioner will explain what to expect and how to care for the area afterward.
