Overview

Moxibustion uses the warmth of carefully burned mugwort, known as moxa, to stimulate selected acupuncture points and areas of the body. In TCM, moxa is traditionally used to warm the meridians, dispel cold, and support yang—the warming and activating aspect of the body.

Cold is understood in TCM to slow the movement of qi and blood, sometimes contributing to stiffness, discomfort, and a persistent feeling of chilliness. Moxa may be selected when your assessment suggests that warmth and nourishment are appropriate, including certain patterns involving cold-sensitive aches or menstrual discomfort.

What to expect

Your practitioner will explain the technique and apply controlled warmth around the selected treatment area, monitoring your skin and comfort throughout. You may notice a distinctive herbal aroma and a gradually spreading warmth. The sensation should feel comfortably warm; let your practitioner know immediately if it feels too hot. Please mention any smoke sensitivity before treatment.
