Overview
Fire cupping uses glass cups and a briefly applied flame to create suction before the cups are placed on the skin. The suction gently lifts the underlying tissue. In TCM, cupping is traditionally used to move qi and blood, release stagnation, and address patterns described as cold or wind affecting the muscles and channels.
At Fingertips, our preference for fire cupping reflects the TCM understanding of fire as yang—warming, active, and mobilizing. We believe this warming quality adds therapeutic value when a person’s pattern calls for warmth and movement. Treatment is selected individually, with attention to how much stimulation your body needs.
What to expect
Your practitioner will assess your skin and the treatment area before placing the cups. The flame is removed before each cup touches your skin. Cups may remain in place or be gently moved over lubricated skin, depending on your treatment plan.
You will feel a pulling or stretching sensation that should remain tolerable. Tell your practitioner immediately about excessive heat or pain. Temporary circular red or purple marks are common and may last several days, sometimes longer. Your practitioner will discuss these marks and aftercare before treatment.
